I read a lot of books, this was a recommendation. I just wasn't impressed. I listen to it on Audiobook from Audible.com and was expecting a deep book on how to work better, but instead it was a short shallow re-hash of what you should already know.
I've read The War of Art and Turning Pro, both good books that I feel really impacted me. Do The Work felt as if he succomed to just throwing something out there and making money off it because of his previous reputation. The book is less than a 100 pages and each pages font is enlarged like a child's book and most pages aren't event completely filled. Turning Pro and The War of Art will do you much better. Do The Work only had 1 point that I liked which was not really mentioned in other books and that is the "inner chatter" that is Resistance and not your true self, your true thoughts. The War of Art will do you good.
I don't write a lot of reviews on here - but for this book - I had to take the time to write one.This book had a profound impact on the me. I feel like my past failures were explained. I feel like my past successes were explained. I feel like, for the first time, I truly understand why I quit nearly everything I start and why I can feel invincible in my endeavors one day and completely defeated the next - and I feel equipped to do it differently now.It is going to sound fake but it isn't -since reading this book:I have stuck to my dietI have taken on some major clients/projects at workI have watched a LOT less TV and have determined to do what it takes to get my work done for the dayI have been able to defeat the dragon more consistently than ever before.I am SO glad I read this book. SO glad. This book ranks up with a handful of books that I have read in my life as LIFECHANGERS. This one has been a catalyst for me. You may not have the same experience - but I honestly want to tell everyone I know - Read this book. And then read it again. I am going to have my 17yo read this book over the summer even thought it has some profanity which I am not thrilled with. If it didn't have it - I would have my 11 year old read it as well. Instead, I will just teach him the concepts within the book. They are going to help me in my business this summer and I want them to learn these principles and to master the ability to DO THE WORK.
I feel this one is unnecessary if you have already read "The War of Art". This seems more like a cash grab to me. I suppose it's OK if you need an additional pep talk - but there's not much here that's unique. One could almost argue that reading this immediately after "The War Of Art" is Resistance creeping in!
This book was recommended to me but after reading this small book in a couple of hours, I wasn't impressed. The basic Idea is to get started on whatever project you may have planned...forget planning, and examining it..just get the work done. You can then go back and fix it. Not a bad idea as this is what some of the top people in any business do. I also hated the way it was presented...each page looked different with different font sizes...not sure if the author was trying to fill more space or be creative but I found it annoying.
There are a lot of reviews of those who have read the book. I guess mine stands out in that Do The Work is one of my staple books. I read it once a year - specifically when I'm working on a goal that is taking longer than planned. Tonight I just published my first book and I decided to pay it forward by leaving reviews for the few books that have been KEY in getting this book done after 3.5 years. While I'm not a fan of Steven's language at times, I absolutely love his simple "Get 'er done" perspective that always, without fail, gets me giddy to get back to work.
This book describes a useful framework for approaching projects and challenges. It draws attention to the prison bars that contain us, but are often invisible until someone points them out. The author gives a useful systematic approach to accomplishing outsized dreams and projects. He adds a bit of motivation and literary examples to his method. It appears that the book is itself an example of using the method he describes, which is also cool. However, it is a bit wushu washy and the unique format somewhat gimmicky in my opinion. The font and text alignment changes serve to highlight points and change context, but this is akin to using five exclamation points or using bold, italic, and underlining throughout your writing. If everything is important and should be heeded, then nothing is. Let the writing speak for itself. Also, if anyone reads this who can ensure the Kindle version is an accurate translation from print with regards to the fonts and format: please check and revise as necessary.
I wish i had read the reviews before purchasing this book, I'm really disappointed in this book. It looks like author just cut and paste the highlights of his other books into this book with no real anchor , instead there are just these quotes floating around. A word of advice from me to you ... save your money!
Read this book off of a recommendation and was not impressed. The author plays with text size and alignment to make his points stand out, but it really misses the mark and instead feels amateurish. Instead of practical motivation tips to help get a project moving, the author relies on new age bs “a work-in-progress generates its own energy field....produces its own gravitational field, created by your will and attention. This field attracts like-spirited entities into its orbitâ€. This quote gives you an insight into the book.
