With more anecdotal material than Robert Lacey's THE KINGDOM, this biography is more personal than the Lacey treatment. Ibn Saud, like Jalaladin Akbar has some remarkable characteristics that grace the greatest of history's leaders. Charismatic, fearless and magnanimous in victory, Ibn Saud's creation of a unified Arabia, much like the efforts of Otto Von Bismarck in Germany, is marked by cunning and daring and a willingness to attack any defeat rather than let it lie. Because of the insular nature of the harem and family life, this book is only a glimpse into the life of one of history's most interesting founding fathers. The book's strongest point is it bibliography, both its length and breadth so that the reader may explore other subjects that arise in the telling of the Saudi tale.

This is a must read for anyone who wants to understand Contemporary geopolitics. Why Saudi Arabia is the way it is han been very well brought out. Saud's genius in building a kingdom and dynasty is very evident.OTOH, the book is an undisguised PR effort for Ibn Saud. He is praised to the sky while others are dismissively caricatured. While opponents are 'fat, murderous, treacherous', Saud can go from being far sighted and wise to a simple Bedouin for whom a man's word is his contract (within the same chapter). Once you discount that, it is a rewarding read.

I'm a Saudi citizen, and there are a lot of information I just knew about. It is a very interesting book to read. However, there is a major mistake that I urge the author to revise as soon as possible. That is: Fatemah is the prophet Muhammad's daughter not his sister.

A great book for putting so many Middle East issues into focus, including historical perspectives that help one see the traditions of violence accompanied by a certain code of moral conduct. An added bonus was the added insight it provides to other countries like Britain, US, the Netherlands (all oil and geo-strategic related) in addition to the locals- Iraq, Iran, Turkey, but also the religious cultures of Wahhabism, Shiite, Suni. bedouin nomads, and the towards the end the emergence of Israel headlong into this mix. Women's rights issues receive less consideration - just enough to put things into perspective. Ibn Saud as a leader seems to be a honorable man of strong character - always forgiving his enemies but being forever vigilant and quick to react when cornered. One of the best historical treatises I have read among the popular literature with abundant footnotes. Slow to start but becomes more and more intriguing as you go. Congratulations to the author.

3.5 stars in my opinion. Lots of information, excellent research, and a thorough bibliography. However, the book reads a lot like a text book. And the book is misnamed. It covers the period from about 1870 to 2010 in the events of the development of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. About 75% of the book covers the life of its founder Ibn Saud. But its thrust is the kingdom and Saud; its not strictly a biography. Good reading if you want to get a good overview of Ibn Saud and the birth and development of Saudi Arabia.

I learned a lot about the Bedouin way of life, and I came to respect Ibn Saud in a way that I did not expect. There was somewhat more detail than I felt was necessary, but it did not interfere with the overall flow of the book. I do not understand or agree with the current way of life in Saudi Arabia (at least as it is portrayed in our media), but I now have a much better understanding of the forces, culture, and this powerful character who created it. In spite of the brutality in his story, I feel Ibn Saud was a truly great leader and an admirable man.

A host of folks ought to have read this book before making decisions involving the middle east!! Particularly G.W. Bush and his coterie that were going to make him a heroic nation-builder, not to mention Tony Blair as this is nothing short of an excellent review of Islam and its combinationa and permutations. The fact that so many acted in ignorance is no excuse for short-sighted reactions to that area of the world.

This is not an easy read, but it is very comprehensive. I have an interest in the subject, based on a job I used to have, so it filled in many blanks for me.

#36,438 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I just finished this book. I also had a shot of rum, a shot of amaretto, and a glass of red wine, so let's see how this review goes! All in all I hated this book. Okay, it wasn't that bad. The more I think of this book, the more I can see the good qualities. Let's start with the good. This is a book about sadness. Sadness sells! Look at Toni Morrison and Amy Tan. Both authors sell books of sadness. Perhaps Plascencia is too in your face though. He uses the word 'sadness' over and over. Way to be discreet! There is magical realism. That sounds like a super interesting topic. We have our world and we have magic! Woohoo! When you think about it, the magic in the book is like the magic in the Bible: plagues, resurrections, creation of a new race. The People of Paper is heavily inspired by the Bible. Unfortunately, it feels just weird. People who burn their flesh with kerosene so they stop peeing in bed? People who grabs bees and purposefully sting themselves to remove depression? So weird...And that's not even the weirdest part! People decide to war against the planet Saturn! It makes no sense! How do you war against a planet? I do not understand...Perhaps this is allegory, and you have to be profound to get it. Unfortunately I am not getting it. Yes, I know who Saturn is. The book reveals it halfway through. But I still feel like the war is pointless. Is that the point? The pointlessness of war? If so...The book just made a very large circle to make that point...All in all I hated it. Okay...I didn't hate it, but The People of Paper is a solid 3 stars. It was okay. Parts were funny, parts were tedious, parts were creative, and parts made zero sense. Perhaps I am simply not a fan of Plascencia's writing style. I do not regret reading it, but I probably would not have finished it if it weren't the book chosen for our book club.Oh yeah! This is the 8th book of our book club.

This is a defiant novel. It defies standard form. It defies standard plot. And the characters even defy the novelist when they develop an antagonistic relationship with Plascencia and his role in their lives. If this sounds odd, it is. This is a very odd book. But here's the thing: this novel also defies any expectation you might bring to it. It can be classified as post-modern as it is full of self-reference, but where so many post-modern novels feel cold and distant, THE PEOPLE OF THE PAPER is full of warmth and deep emotion. Plascencia weaves the fantastic with the absurd with the humorous with the heartfelt to create a portrayal of the human condition that is at once universal and unique.I read this novel seven years ago and it has stayed with me ever since. Indeed, it has haunted me, its imagery and emotional heft coming back to me again and again. I read a lot of novels but few have such a lasting effect. I don't know of a higher praise for a book.

This, in some sense, is storytelling about storytelling, and the result is absolutely lovely--I can't say much more than that without feeling liking I'm giving too much away.I will, however, leave you with two things:(1) At one point in the novel, The People of Paper is described as "the war on omniscient narration (a.k.a. the war against the commodification of sadness)" which I thought was fitting.(2) It takes some of the modern style (that others would call "gimmicks") employed by the likes of Dave Eggers in A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and Jonathan Safran Foer in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (Movie Tie-In): A Novel to a whole new level. If you thought those were gimmicky, avoid this altogether.

he People of Paper by Salvador Plascencia is a novel that is in no way easy to categorize. According to Plascencia, the novel is “a war-novel, a memoir, it’s about immigration, it’s a meta-fiction, and it’s a love-story.” The heart of the novel is built around Federico de la Fe and his daughter, Little Merced, who leave Mexico for the United States after Federico’s wife, Merced, leaves him. Once in the U.S., Federico bands together with the locals, forming a group called the EMF who wage a war “against Saturn, against sadness, and against omniscient narration.” The novel is written in three sections, each including several chapters. Each chapter enlists the perspectives of a variety of characters, including Saturn, the omniscient narrator. The pages are laid out in columns, and, at one point, words are blacked out or, in certain editions, are cut from the page. The narrator himself makes an appearance as well. Weird in plot, characterization, genre, organization, and style, I cannot think of a book stranger and more exciting than The People of Paper.

What an amazing book, but what sadness I feel knowing that a lot of people (not of paper but of meat) will never be exposed to it. It is this feeling what often takes me from thinking 'this is a good book' all the way to 'this is excellent.' The genres it is usually catalogued under run from Latin to Experimental, but I'm here to say that it should just be under Excellent Fiction. The author has a creative genius that transcends geography and time and returns the novel to what it should be, something new and fresh - the word novel should, after all, stand for something. All the praises to this book, one that I'll be happy to recommend to anyone looking for original literary and emotional research.

I love Plascencia's metafictive writing style. His approach is so different from the traditional metafiction and so less, for lack of a better word, douchy. His imagination is wild and creative and bold. His sense of culture both American and Mexican and Mexican-American (Chicano) is steep and he is able to give a history, anthropology and sociology class all in a few hundred pages. Not to mention his stimulation of all the senses keeps you interested throughout the book. My only regret was not buying the hardcopy version, as it has actual pages with cut out sections and neat intricacies that the paperback version lacks. All in all, a great read for anyone who is trying to find inspiration into their own imagination.

#3,000 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

As an ultra-"crunchy" mama of 5, I consider this book to be made for those who dabble in alternative/natural "medicine", not for those who deeply trust in their spiritual and physical bodies. The wording was a bit harsh at times, intimidating, and even fear-promoting. Personally, I felt the recommendations were often too mainstream and entrenched in Western Medicine. I have a collection of over 50 natural birth books, and this is by far my least favorite.

My goodness. This book is AWESOME. When I was prepping to have my first baby I wanted to approach the process more naturally, but had a hard time finding reliable information on my options. Every book I looked into offered only conventional methods. On the flip side, the resources for a natural approach (mostly online) lacked the science and evidence based research I craved. I had to look in a ton a different places to try to find what I was looking for...and didn't know who or what to trust! Now, with my second baby, I feel more empowered in my education and decisions...but it wasn't easy to get there. (This book arrived about a month after my second little bundle, but being the baby junkie that I am I had to get my hands on it ASAP!)This book is extensively informational, and offers well researched information for every approach to pregnancy and labor. It lists the options, facts, possible risks, and benefits for every detail of the process. I truly feel it's the *perfect* book for EVERY MAMA TO BE--weather you lean natural or not--because information and options = power!I love this book so much that I even ordered a few copies to gift and share with others! <3 :]

I'm a mom of three, a doula and a childbirth educator, and when I found out that Mama Natural was coming out with a pregnancy and childbirth guide, I was beyond excited. I KNEW this would be amazing and after receiving the book, I was right! The first thing you'll notice are the beautiful illustrations that draw your eye in to the page. I love that Genevieve included recipes in each chapter and other helpful tips for a pregnant mom. The most important part is the information, though. This book is packed full so that you can understand your pregnancy week by week and also make informed decisions for the birth YOU want. There are sections on natural birth, interventions you can expect during labor, support for VBAC moms and also how to get that gentle cesarean you might want. She leaves no one behind. This book is perfect for the new mom who is just venturing into the world of pregnancy and childbirth, and also for the seasoned mother who might want to change her outcome. It has a natural point of view for a natural process and empowers women. We CAN give birth how we want.**I received this book in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.**

My first run-in with Mama Natural took place on Pinterest. We’ll call it an e-meeting of sorts. I’m always pinning useful information for later and Mama Natural has LOTS of it!Prior to reviewing this book, I completed the Mama Natural Birth Course as part of my Doula Certification work and it is also– AMAZINGFirst and foremost, I love rich color and an easy to read text— this book had all of that.Secondly, It has great illustrations— and not just the typical diagrams you wouldexpect to see in a pregnancy planning book. There are illustrations of the author and her spouse, example mothers, some of the diagrams you would expect, and even illustrations of sample meals that one might try to prepare to switch up their weekly routine. I would also like to highlight here that the images are drawn illustrations– not just photographs (though I’m not opposed to photos)– that gave it a really personal touch to me. If you read a good number of these books, you become accstomed to seeing certain photos and images and this was a nice change of pace.It includes a week-by-week guide to pregnancy and childbirth from a natural perspective. I shared a bit of my personal testimony of wanting to eliminate as many commercial medications and medical interventions as possible in one of my older posts. It is important to me that I seek out knowledge to prepare myself for a natural pregnancy and to support my friends and family who are currently having babies and who desire to do so naturally. KNOWLEDGE is POWER!Her week-by-week tips include some of the most practical and helpful information I’ve seen. It was like having all of the best Pinterst Pins in one place! There are recipes, affirmations, and useful tips — like how to use your existing wardrobe throughout pregnancy and when/how to decide if any items are worth adding to your collection. The book doesn’t stop at the week-by-week tips and advice for during pregnancy, it also includes labor and post partum and one part that I thought was very important was that pregnancy loss was included. As someone who is both a trained Social Worker and Doula, I understand that loss and post partum symptoms are often two big “elephants in the room.” Many are uncomfortable with discussing with them and if a mother experiences either (or both) she can be left feeling isolated and with no recourse. One of the greatest way to overcome the stigma is to talk about these issues— these births matter and mothers who experience post partum symptoms (baby blues, depression, etc.) are not alone and are STILL good mothers!I’ll stop there, before I get all the way up on my soapbox.Long story short, I really love this book.I purchased a Kindle copy for my personal use and will definitely be buying others to give away as gifts– it’s just THAT awesome!I highly recommend that you add it to your collection if you’re in the market for this type of book. It could also make a great gift for soon-to-be or future mothers in your life.

I wanted to like this book so much! It’s definitely not a week-by-week guide. There’s barely two paragraphs on what’s happening on certain weeks. I’m going to admit I’m only on week 6 and will continue reading but honestly I’ve skipped over a lot because of her condescending tone and attitude towards women that may want to have their babies the traditional, medical way in a hospital. She briefly gives her explanation of “benefits” of giving birth in hospitals however it always ends in a “but...”I was expecting more natural health remedies for pregnancy symptoms, diet, organic products for stretch marks and things like that. Maybe I should have started with the typical “What to expect when you’re expecting”.
