First off, yes, these are the same type of material that most Pathfinder flipmats are made out of. If you're looking for thicker tiles or something you can roll up and takeaway, these aren't designed for you.That said, they're pretty awesome.I run a large group campaign, and I tend to maintain a high level of visual aesthetic on my table. That's even harder to do, because I'm running an open modular campaign, where the group has a remarkable amount of freedom to do as they please in several ways that I can't totally plan for. I try to have highly detailed three dimensional terrain and maps built for each location and encounter, but sometimes you just don't have the time or foresight to do that. These tiles are great in a pinch, and honestly they're generic enough that you could use them over and over for a variety of interior locations. If you're going to do that a lot, and have a moderately sized table, I might recommend getting a second set, just to make sure you don't run out of a particular tile needed to make your map... I haven't done this, but I'm giving it serious consideration, depending upon how much time these see on the table. The smaller pack with themed additions is a good purchase as well, especially if you aren't the type to put props and scatter physical items onto the map.Overall, I'd call these a solid purchase. You can design your maps in advance, take a quick photo, and use that during the actual game session so that your party can't meta-navigate the map in advance. That's particularly handy. Again, whether your group is a basic grid paper sort of game, or if you're a high production value table set sort of thing, these look more than good enough to use in a pinch or if you just want something cheap and easy to reuse in a variety of places. This would now be one of my first recommendations for a new GM/DM, after the necessary core and source books.
Overall I am pretty satisfied. The tiles are nice and colorful and have small indicators in the corner for serialization. It also comes with 5 (or so) dividers in case one wishes to categorize them for the purpose of dungeon building.They are a little smaller than I imagined, but that is not a significant issue. They are also a little thinner than I had hoped, which does make it a bit difficult to "shuffle" them (in case one wishes to create a procedurally-generated map)Regardless, this is a pretty good tool for Pathfinder, D&D, and perhaps for other tabletop games that use this sort of map feature.
Decent starter set.
