I first tried to learn Perl by using the other O'Reilly book, "Programming Perl". I was completely lost. Then I found this book and my second attempt was much more successful. This book is great for self-teaching, and the book chapters should be read in order as each chapter builds on previous ones. Each chapter has plenty of good programming exercises with answers in the back of the book. I review this book in the context of the table of contents.Chapter 1. IntroductionThis chapter answers basic questions such as how to get and install Perl, how to construct a basic Perl program, and then takes you on a whirlwind tour of Perl.Chapter 2. Scalar DataAs a general rule, when Perl has just one of something, that's a scalar, which is the topic of this chapter.Chapter 3. Lists and ArraysIf a scalar is the "singular" in Perl, as described at the beginning of Chapter 2, the "plural" in Perl is represented by lists and arrays. A list is an ordered collection of scalars. An array is a variable that contains a list. In Perl, the two terms are often used as if they're interchangeable. But, to be accurate, the list is the data, and the array is the variable. You learn about these differences through practical code examples in this chapter.Chapter 4. SubroutinesYou've now seen and used some of the built-in system functions, such as chomp, reverse, and print. But, as other languages do, Perl has the ability to make subroutines. The name of a subroutine is another Perl identifier occasionally with an optional ampersand in front. There's a rule about when you can omit the ampersand and when you cannot, and that rule is discussed.Chapter 5. Input and OutputThis chapter covers the 80% of the I/O you'll need for most programs. If you're familiar with the workings of standard input, output, and error streams, you're ahead of the game. If not, you get you caught up by the end of this chapter.Chapter 6. HashesIn this chapter, you will see a feature that makes Perl one of the world's great programming languages--hashes. Though hashes are a powerful and useful feature, you may have used other powerful languages for years without ever hearing of hashes. But you'll use hashes in nearly every Perl program you'll write from now on; they're that important.A hash is a data structure like an array, in that it can hold any number of values and retrieve these values at will. However, instead of indexing the values by number, as in arrays, you look up the values by name. That is, the indices aren't numbers but are arbitrary unique strings.Chapter 7. In the World of Regular ExpressionsPerl has many features that set it apart from other languages. Of all those features, one of the most important is its strong support for regular expressions. These allow fast, flexible, and reliable string handling. But that power comes at a price. Regular expressions are tiny programs in their own special language, built inside Perl. This means that you're about to learn another programming language, although, fortunately, it's a simple one. In this chapter, you'll visit the world of regular expressions, where, for the most part, you can forget about the world of Perl.Chapter 8. Matching with Regular ExpressionsIn the previous chapter, you visited the world of regular expressions. Now you'll see how that world fits into the world of Perl.Chapter 9. Processing Text with Regular ExpressionsYou can use regular expressions to change text, too. So far, the book has only shown you how to match a pattern. Now, you'll learn how to use patterns to locate the parts of strings that you want to change.Chapter 10. More Control StructuresIn this chapter, you'll see some alternative ways to write Perl code. For the most part, these techniques don't make the language more powerful, but they make it easier or more convenient to get the job done. You don't have to use these techniques in your own code, but don't skip this chapter. You're certain to see these control structures in other people's code, sooner or later.Chapter 11. File TestsEarlier, this book showed how to open a filehandle for output. Normally, that will create a new file, wiping out any existing file with the same name. Perhaps you want to check that there isn't a file by that name. Perhaps you need to know how old a given file is, or perhaps you want to go through a list of files to find which ones are larger than a certain number of bytes and not accessed for a certain amount of time. Perl has a complete set of tests you can use to find information about files, and that is the topic of this chapter.Chapter 12. Directory OperationsThe files created in the previous chapter were generally in the same place as your program. But modern operating systems let you organize files into directories, allowing you to keep your MP3 files away from your important work files so you don't accidentally send an MP3 file to your boss. In this chapter you'll see how Perl lets you manipulate these directories directly, in ways that are even fairly portable from one operating system to another.Chapter 13. Strings and SortingPerl is designed to be good at solving programming problems that are about 90% working with text and 10% everything else. So it's no surprise that Perl has strong text-processing abilities, including all that can be done with regular expressions. But sometimes the regular expression engine is too fancy, and you need a simpler way of working with a string, as you'll see in this chapter.Chapter 14. Process ManagementOne of the best parts of being a programmer is launching someone else's code so you don't have to write it yourself. This chapter shows how to manage your child processes by launching other programs directly from Perl. The examples in this chapter are primarily Unix-based; if you have a non-Unix system, expect to see some differences.Chapter 15. Perl ModulesThere is a lot more to Perl than what is in this book, and there are a lot of people doing a lot of interesting things with Perl. If there is a problem to solve, then somebody has probably already solved it and made their solution available on the Comprehensive Perl Archive Network (CPAN), which is a worldwide collection of servers and mirrors containing thousands of modules of reusable Perl code. If you want to learn how to write modules, consult the "Alpaca book". In this chapter, you learn how to use modules that already exist.Chapter 16. Some Advanced Perl TechniquesThe techniques in this chapter are only "advanced" in the sense that they aren't necessary for beginners. The first time you read this book, you may want to either skip or skim this chapter so you can get right to using Perl. Then come back to it later when you're ready to get more out of Perl.Appendix A - Exercise AnswersAppendix B - Beyond the Llama

First of all, this book is only the beginning. It does teach the basics including arrays, scalars, functions and many other topics that are central to a basic understanding of Perl. It also covers regular expressions which aside from the great swatch of modules is one of Perl's greatest strengths.Because of that and the teaching style this book earns the 5 star rating.Toward the end it hints at some of the other 'required' topics such as references, modules and objects. After you've read this book get a copy of Intermediate Perl to read up on those topics.

I purchased this book hoping to gain insight into Perl after having experience with C, C++ and Java. I came back with not only a wonderful, base knowledge of the principals of Perl, but came out with some other skills as well. This books provides a wonderful, quick, easy read for beginners and pros alike. The knowledge of the language coupled with the coverage of core concepts, methodology, practices and practical programmatic thinking was a delight to read/review.

Great book and well written.... Even for the SE, such as myself this helps bring back some things that I have forgotten or needed a refresh on.

I have experience programing, but some of the other Perl beginner books try toput too much in a book for beginres in Perl. This book covers all the basics for someone new to the language

I have programmed in Python and a little bit in C and I think this book is great - and so is perl. I already knew a little bit about perl from reading a Wikipedia article and looking at the perldoc documentation, but Learning Perl taught my some very useful things that I would have never found alone (splicing, nongreedy regexes, just to name a few). perl has amazing support for I/O, and the book helped me understand regexes and file I/O. I found both perl and this book to be good for other things, too. I wrote a logging program that wrote logs with timestamps, for example. Other things I used this book and perl for included a calculator, a text-to-HTML conversion program, and a password cracker. Learning Perl helped me uncover some bugs in my programs, taught me many new things, and was also just a fun read. The only thing I would add would be more about OOP (Object Oriented Programming). I found the TOC (Table of Contents) to be very well done and the e-book version had links to the proper sections. I could find anything quite quickly with the excellent TOC.

How can you program Perl without this book? After years I still use it from time to time when I have a brain fade regarding some common syntax issue.

I had a physical copy of this book that I loaned to a coworker and her dogs got it and destroyed it. This book is an excellent resource not only for learning Perl, but also for using as a quick reference down the road.

From Library Journal

Four or five years ago two lifelong friends with a considerable amount of pocket change developed a lust for pueblo pottery. Together they visited the pueblos and villages of the Southwest, bought "insignificant" pieces from potters, traders, shops, and shows, and came up with a stunning collection. The authors write about these pots in a breezy, amusing, but well-informed style. They explain their "cheapskate" buying policy?"If it's over $40, think hard about it"?and tell what to look for in a pot. They also explain regional differences in clay and treatment and provide great maps. After discussing the styles and traditions of the past and their influence, they revisit the pueblos in alphabetical order and discuss each pueblo's style ("Where Acoma and Laguna's bird is a parrot, Zia's is a roadrunner often startled"). The authors claim "Southwestern pottery is not only one of the world's import art forms, it's the most accessible." For those who agree, there's not another book like this slick, smart, up-to-date invitation to collect.?Gay W. Neale, Southside Virginia Community Coll. I was able to use this to identity some items I have and to home in on specific areas of interest to me. It is beautifully illustrated and I very much like the historic approach to the subject. It is a classic and should be part of any library on Native American art and culture. It would be so much more convenient to use were it in a binder format! The large size of the pages and soft-cover make it a bit unwieldy to use. So the content is great but the format is not user friendly if you do a lot of searches and want to learn about a particular item quickly. Unfortunately, that puts it in the category of a "coffee table" display book unless you are a determined collector or have access to lots of examples of this pottery that you can spread out and evaluate. But, for example, this is not something you'd bring with you to a shop to look up a piece you are interested in. That said, it is more convenient, given the breadth of the information, than looking at each site for the different SW pottery tribal variants.

If you're new to collecting, or you want to buy just one book about Pueblo pottery, buy this book. Period. This is the most down-to-earth treatment of this involved subject that you'll find. The authors stress simplicity while encouraging readers to buy what they like and not to overspend. More than that, the authors have practiced what they preach, and the pages of color photographs are a testament to the fact that their approach works. For me, the advice in this book made this beautiful art approachable and affordable. This book will teach you about the history and basics of the art form and introduce you to the various pueblos and their pots and potters. On top of that, it's well indexed and a great reference book. Most of all, you will enjoy the authors' writing; their style is conversational and pleasant, rather than academic or haughty. It makes for a work that's not only informative, but fun to read. And whether you read this book front cover to back, pick out individual chapters of interest, or simply use it as a reference, it will be worth every penny you pay for it. It's my favorite (and most useful) book on the subject.

A very good resource for the general overview of Southwest pottery, then and now. I got tired fast with their "witty" comments, and felt that it took away from their credibility, somehow, but they are mainly collectors, so, there it is… As a potter of traditional methods, I would have liked to see a little more about techniques, clay bodies, pigments, etc. but I think this book is valuable for its general treatment of a highly ornate subject. I love just looking throughout the pictures as inspiration, and reading the captions for specifics.

...then buy several more books on these pots.I bought the first edition and it was a nice introduction to a complex area. The second is well worth the investment.

This is an excellent book for both the beginner or serious student of Southwestern Pottery. It gives examples of all styles, types, and designs, making it easy for anyone to understand what makes each Pueblo's pottery unique. Perhaps not as "in depth" as some others, this book is easily the best book out there today as far as explaining and illustrating the basics. It really is an indispensable guide and reference book. The authors are regular guys rather than scholars, so it is easy and enjoyable to read, and filled with great photos of their quite amazing collections. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a place to begin learning about Southwestern Pottery.

Great intro to Southwestern pottery. Buy this one, not the original edition (this is updated).

I'm fairly new to collecting Native American pottery (and sort of concentrating on Navajo) and this book is an excellent way to begin. Its a good overview and then zeroes in on some of the more popular styles. If you think you might want to buy some pottery on your next trip through Indian Country, this book can help you make wise choices.

This is a wonderful book detailing the historical significance and beauty of Southwestern pottery. I read this in conjunction with "Talking With the Clay: The Art of Pueblo Pottery" and together I revisited the pottery shops I used to go to when I lived in the Southwest.

Ok, here is my story:On my first attempt, I took FE exam right after graduation in summer. I used NCEES FE Reference Handbook and the practice exam sold by NCEES for preparation. I skimmed over Reference Handbook while doing the practice exam. After two weeks, I showed up for the exam thinking I am going to pass. I was WRONG. I failed miserably. I calculated my raw score to be 48%. I would say 20% of the test was very similar to the practice exam. I found the exam to be easy (even though I failed) because I knew most of the materials (or at least I have seen them before), but I wasn't able to quickly point out the equations in Reference Handbook to get the answers. And sometimes, you know the materials, but because you haven't done or seen that particular question while in school, then you will get stuck on doing it or you will get wrong answer trying to solve it. After all, I had to guess a lot of the questions, and since I got stuck on some of the questions, then I ran out of time while still having to answer remaining 20 questions. After huge disappointment and some downtime, I realized that I needed to pass this test no matter how many attempts it took (got to be POSITIVE in life). I knew I needed to do a lot of questions to boost my exam taking speed and get myself familiar with as many questions as I could. So, I bought this book on feprep.com (eBook version). I started doing all the questions without looking at the solutions. Yes, you need to do it the hard way if you want to pass this exam. I only looked over solution after I was done fully attempting to solve a problem. It took me about good 40 days and 4 hours a day on average to do all the questions, relearn all the materials that were a bit dull, and review everything from beginning to end. The problems in this book are way more difficult than what I got on the test, which is a good thing because it forced me to relearn all the materials again. As a result, hopefully I am a better engineer today that I was yesterday. Anyways, I showed up on the exam day being prepared, I was able to get through the first 55 questions (i.e., the first part of the exam before taking a short break) with ease. It took me 2 hours and 10 minutes, and I only flagged 8 questions for review. So, I knew I did well and had 3 hours and 20 minutes left for the second part of the exam which is a bit more difficult than the first part (at least, that's how I felt). I got through the second part (i.e., 55 questions) and had 18 questions flagged for review. Although, I had 20 minutes remaining, so, I decided to make educated guess on the questions that I wasn't able to get the right answers. Usually, in some questions, you could easily rule out one of the answers because it doesn't even belong there (if you know the materials, you can easily point that one out). And then, you are left with 3 answers. At this point you could either guess or pick the answer that is more closely represent the value of your wrong calculation (I am not sure if this worked or not but that's what I did).I took the test on Tuesday, and I got my passing result the following Wednesday.Just a side note; by no means I am a smart kid. I was in bottom 10% of my class. I came to USA as an immigrant at age 16 and worked my way up. I graduated with GPA lower than 3.0. My school has a passing rate of 90%+ for the first time exam takers. I just hope this review would give you enough courage and boost of energy to finally pass this test and move forward with your career.Do good in life and be happy!

The book has the exact same questions as the earlier version of this book. Save your money. I bought the 2014 version of this book and then recently bought the 2017 version of this book. I compared a few sections and they have the same exact questions with the same variables.I was hoping to have another set of random test questions to study from. Very discouraging .All they did was slap a new cover on the book and update the copyright info.I've attached a picture. Read question #4.Same on both editions.

Ate up all the people saying, "take it during school, it's fresh in your mind and you won't need to study." I took that advice and bombed my first attempt at the FE Civil CBT.I buckled down and bought his book. You won't find problems like this in the exam but it forces you to use the equation booklet and the tougher the problem, the more time I spent with the booklet. This is what helped me be confident and know what I was doing during my second go with the FE. I just found out today that I passed!!!!My advice is to really be familiar with the booklet and know the basics per each subject.

I'm a 5th year student and I'm graduating this year. As with most civil students, at my school anyways, I wanted to get my engineer-in-training license because that's the first step to get a professional engineer's license. I signed up for my exam in January and had a test date last Saturday. About two weeks before the exam, I started to put some time into studying. The resources I had were: Marshall University's Youtube videos (they're great!), the official FE Civil Exam Practice Exam, the Lindeburg FE Civil Practice Problems book (this book), and the NCEES Reference Handbook. My school did a fairly good job at preparing us but I am one of those students who struggle in classes. I first reviewed the Marshall University videos. I only managed to watch the math, statics, and part of the transportation videos before I really needed to cram.I cracked open this book and realized that I knew almost nothing. That's okay though, because the problems in this book are more difficult than the ones on the actual exam and it covers more topics. There are solutions to every problem. My method to understand the problems in this book was to at least try the problem; if I didn't know how to do it, look at the solution and study each step. Write them down. I went through most of the problems in the major sections (geotech, transportation, statics, math, hydraulics/hydrology, materials, structural analysis) by the day before the test and I think it helped me a lot.HOWEVER, do keep in mind that the actual exam is computer based and has a searchable reference handbook. You won't be able to give yourself a "real" practice exam if you don't use a searchable PDF of the reference handbook for the equations. Although the official practice exam is nice, I only went through the first couple pages (mostly math) and stopped.I took the exam last Saturday and found out my result this morning. If you're reading this, good luck! You won't succeed solely by this book but it's a great supplement.

Did all the problems in a course of 2-3 weeks and was able to pass the FE Exam on my 1st try, also recommend getting the NCESS reference manual to use along with this. As that's what you're provided during the test so it is wise to grow familiar with it.

I did every problem in the book and when I got to the test it wasn't hard at all, I found out I passed today.

I do not love the way this book was written. I find it hard to follow and understand. It was required for the class I am taking though.

Received this book quick. The condition of the book was great. I really enjoyed this book. It provided good information on various cultures and how nurses can help patients have great experiences and outcomes.

Don't like, poorly written and concepts are all over the place.

This book has a lot of information on the connections between spirituality and religion and how some go hand in hand and some are separated from the culture. But very interesting and helpful for a better understanding that in this nursing profession, the mind has to be open and no judgment and be willing to teach and educate both the patient and the nurse as well.

great book

Haven't read much in the book yet, but the quality is good, as I expected. I use it for my older adult nursing course. I like having access to the online resources, as well. :)

As expected

From Booklist

Moran’s flailing, retro-pop cartoon characters are the lure to this fizzy but enlightening entry in the Community Helpers series. A class taking a field trip to a construction site meets mustached Mr. Moore, who expounds upon the basics. (In a nicely realistic touch, “He says we have to stay outside the fence.”) Mr. Moore shows off the various machines and techniques that will help build this future school, taking special care to talk about safety measures (hard hats, vests, beeping trucks) and green energy. The text, delivered in a wacky font, offers easy-to-digest nuggets (“Some trucks work with big metal teeth”), while boxed sections explain the scene more deeply (“An excavator digs wide ditches for basements”). Zany to look at but pretty darn educational. Grades 1-3. --Daniel Kraus

Review

"Told from the perspective of students on a class field trip, the books introduce community helpers and explain what they do. In Firefighter, readers learn about the tools and equipment needed in the work. Fire safety is discussed both on the job and in the home. In Librarian, children are introduced to 'information experts, storytellers, and technology wizards.' Readers learn that librarians teach about ebooks and technology and encourage questions to 'pump up your brainpower.' The book does not mention the necessary training and education a librarian must pursue in order to work in a library. In Police Officer, Officer Gabby visits the classroom and explains the different types of work police can perform throughout their day. Construction Worker discusses the various skills needed for this type of work. The class visits the site of a future school and learns about the types of machines used. In Teacher, the students visit a fourth-grade classroom. The captions discuss the types of equipment used in the classroom, such as computers and whiteboards, and about following rules. Cartoon-style animated drawings in bright colors introduce diverse characters who will capture children's interest. Chapters are divided into three parts, captions provide additional information, and there is ample spacing between sentences. Additional titles where more books on community helpers are needed." --School Library Journal--Journal"Moran's flailing, retro-pop cartoon characters are the lure to this fizzy but enlightening entry in the Community Helpers series. It's a good book for children four through six years old. Perhaps even a little older. It provides good information. My Pre-K class loved it. I didn't give it five stars because I found it to be a bit long. I read it in two sittings. Some children may not be able to sit for more than one chapter. The book in divided into chapters.

Fun fictional story about a field trip to a construction site to watch their new school being built! We could look around to our classroom and find all the same details!

Meeting the community workers in our neighborhood and seeing what they do is a great way for my toddler class to learn in the class. Colorful, and just long enough to hold their attention.

Great series

Our grandson love construction equipment & know s the name of all of the machines

Bought for my classroom my students will love it.

Kid Friendly!

#17,116 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I collect cookbooks and have for over 50 years. As a Cuban-American, a full two shelves of my cookbook stash is on Cuban cuisine. I have cookbooks that my mother brought from Cuba; the first booklets that were published by the exile community in the 60's (some of which are just a few pages stapled together). Not to mention binders and binders of recipes published in newspapers and magazines. I mention all this to establish myself as a Cuban cookbook fanatic. (I won't go into what kind of a cook I am, we can skip that part). Now, with my credentials in place, I have to say that, in my entire collection there isn't another book like this one. It is far and away, the BEST I've ever seen in every way that matters:--the recipes are genuine.--they are well-explained and easy to follow.--there is fascinating anecdotal information about them and their history.--traditional, current Cuban, and Cuban-American dishes are included.--It is almost encyclopedic in its scope.--they are presented and grouped logically.--the photography is beautiful.--the book is well-indexed and cross-referenced (not always a given in Latin cookbooks!)--the book (paper weight, quality, cover, layout, design, etc.) is first class.I have to congratulate the author for, not just her efficiency, but also for her sensitivity and her obvious love for her subject. I want to thank her not just on my own behalf but on behalf of my children's generation and other generations to come in both shores. And I have to congratulate myself on having had the sense to buy it the minute I saw it. I imagine that, someday, it will get a place of honor among my cookbooks but, for the time being, I'm just enjoying going on a culinary voyage of memory, imagination and taste.

I received this book in 2 days. It was in excellent condition. I probably own 30 Cuban cookbooks. This one will be one that i go back to regularly. I have already made the picadillo, masas de puerco, panquecitos and tomorrow will be fricasse de pollo. What drew me to this book were 2 things.First were the photos. I lived in Miami for 26 years. I know these pictures are not from Miami, but they remind me of Miami so much. Also in all my Cuban cookbooks there were no recipes for panquecitos. When i saw this book had one i had to have it. They are delicious little butter flavored pound cakes in a muffin form. I now live in Tennessee and they taste slightly like the corn bread muffins that you get at Famous Dave's restaurant . Furthermore, the first chapter containing recipes for the bakery items has several recipes not included in other books. I highly suggest this book.

I married into a Cuban family and absolutely love the cuisine, but almost none of my in-laws like to cook! Thus, I've spent the last several years collecting a mish-mash of Cuban recipes from a variety of sources. Now, with "The Cuban Table," I finally have a definitive, go-to Cuban cookbook.First things first, this cookbook is gorgeous. The sturdy cover, incredible photos, heavy paper stock, etc., all combine to create a cookbook that looks and feels like it belongs on the shelf of any serious home cook. But that means nothing if the recipes themselves are a bust. Thankfully, that is absolutely not the case here. What you'll find in this collection is essentially a "bible" of Cuban cuisine. Not only does it include just about any classic dish that you would find in any good Cuban restaurant, it also includes a number of lesser-known dishes that I was unfamiliar with. The recipes themselves are easy to follow and often include some good background information or stories to explain the recipes' origins.I've made about a half-dozen of the recipes so far, and they've all turned out fantastic. I've mostly been working my way through the classics--frijoles negros, arroz con pollo, ropa vieja, etc.--and everything so far has received rave reviews. In particular, the frijoles negros recipe turned out the single best batch of black beans I've ever made. Of course, as with any other cookbook, you might find that you want to tweak a recipe here or there to suit your own personal taste. For instance, while the ropa vieja was incredibly tasty just as written, when I make it again, I'll use green cabbage instead of red cabbage (I felt the red cabbage imparted too strong a flavor into the broth) and add a little bit of cumin, as I felt the dish was missing that particular element.Bottom line: If you love cooking Cuban food, this cookbook is a must-have.

I never write reviews but I felt this book deserved it. I am not a good cook. It’s no secret. But I love to eat, especially Cuban food. There are no good Cuban restaurants near me so hence my search for a cookbook for Cuban food. Believe me when I say this is the only one I will use from now on. The food is authentic, delicious, and most importantly, the recipes are easy to follow and turns out every time! It’s amazing. Rice has been very intimidating for me but these recipes make it possible for someone like me to make perfect rice every time! I love each and every recipe and the stories and pictures are just icing on the cake. Thank you so much for this book!

I haven't tried every recipe in this beautiful book, but what I have tried is delicious. It's important to read through the ones that interest you ahead of time since they may require marination overnight, or for several hours. But they are worth the effort. Ingredients are fairly easy to find. And, if you're careful, you will be able to duplicate the promised meals. No special chef skills are required. It's a great book for anyone who wants to experience more Cuban flavors.

I just love this book! My husband and brother in law are from Cuba, and we made several recipes from this book already!!! Always comes up amazing! We usually use the list of ingredients but not the amount, so it might be a little different from the book, but it gives you an amazing base to know how to cook what you want.
