When my daughter read this book and said “she looks like meâ€! It literally brought tears to my eyes. It’s so important for our little girls to see positive images of themselves in a world that defines beauty as having long, blonde straight hair. I definitely recommend this book for all of our chocolate baby girls out there!
My daughter and I LOOVE this book. We can totally relate to Keyanna and her mom. We were both laughing as we read it for the first time because it was the exact things we do. My 6 yr old daughter is in a mostly white school and up until I got the book, she always asked why she didn't have long and silky hair like the blondes and brunettes in her class. She is now very confident in her look. Other books I got her were "Big Hair, Don't care", "Penny and the Magic Puffballs" and "I'm a Pretty Little Black Girl".
I'd give it 5 stars. i took one off because my kids just don't care for it as much as I'd like. I'm beginning working on growing my black girl book library for my girls and I'm also *trying* to stick with supporting black authors. This book was a good addition. I love the illustrations they are so creative. Especially the one with "rows of braids". This isn't one of my kid's favorites though. I have a few books with black main characters but they've gravitated toward Five Birds on a Wire by Melanie Charlene and Shanna's Ballerina Show much more. Beautiful book though.
I bought this book as a recommendation from my Grandmother for my daughter who is five. She was being teased in school because she is the only little black girl in her class and she hair is different from everyone else’s hair. She told me the teasing made her want to hide. After reading the book she had a smile on her face and a sense of pride in herself. It does a great job of conveying to small children to embrace their differences and to shine rather than hide behind them.
By age two my daughter had already been asked by some girls at her daycare why her hair looked and felt different than theirs. It is important to me for her to feel confident in herself and to be able to reinforce positive images of a girl who looks similar, wears her hair in styles that my daughter wears and is beautiful. My daughter especially loves the parts about the hair combing rituals that we partake in and asks me to read those parts over and over.
I just received this today and couldn't wait to read it to my 2 yr old. What a great book to help instill self-esteem in our young girls that may not always feel so beautiful in a world that only acknowledges straight hair and loose curls as beautiful. Even my 13 yr old cuddled with us and listened.

The book arrived quickly and in tact.It's a little larger than I was expecting but that's great given that I purchased it for my daughter.I look forward to reading this with her.Would recommend to anyone!
