It is a while ago that I read this book, and I liked it, albeit not enough to go through it again. Ms Bentley described 4 dancers who did rather erotic numbers in the days that the Salomania rage was sweeping over Europe. She seemed more interested in the motives of the dancers rather than the quality of the performances. This, because of her own reaction to performing erotic dances. I think it is this that makes the book helpfull. It is not realy about dance, it is about the experiences and feelings of women who expose themselves, and use the dance as a vehicle. In the eyes of some this may be a taboo subject, and I admire the honesty wherewith Ms Bentley writes about her subject, and about her own feelings.

A former Balanchine dancer becomes a writer, gets interested in the bizarre Victorian/Edwardian phenomena of "Salomania," and finds a willing publisher in one of the most prestigious presses in the world. Talk about dreamland. And the book is perfect. After you read the first ten pages, you will have trouble putting it down.Bentley moves swiftly from her own personal connections to her subject matter: dance, a poignant photograph of Colette, Balanchine's curious interest in Crazy Horse strippers, her own experiment in confrontational nudity. She writes a brief chapter on the historical and literary Salome that is, among other things, the most intelligent essay I've ever read on Wilde's play.She devotes a chapter each to the four centers of the fixation on Salome--Maud Allen, Mata Hari, Ida Rubenstein, and Colette--while providing a wealth of information on the changes in the history of dance between 1890 and 1920. And she finds in women's fascination with Salome a psychological core that is compelling and persuasive.This is an excellent book. Beautifully conceived, intelligently realized, well written, amusing and informative, it is a joy to read and recommend.

This is not really a book about dance. It's an informal work of history that focusses on 4 women who were prominent erotic dancers in the early 20th century, but the book sets out to describe the lives of these women in all their various aspects instead of just their dance careers. The common background for all 4 of these women is a peculiar cultural phenomenon, a widespread popular obsession (triggered by Wilde's play "Salome") with the dance of Salome. All 4 of these women exploited this Salome craze for their own advantage and self-aggrandizement, but in quite different ways (and often with tragic results). The book has a refreshingly informal style and the prose is direct and clear.

Oscar Wilde is responsible for striptease. Well, not directly, perhaps, but there is a surprising connection drawn in _Sisters of Salome_ (Yale University Press) by Toni Bentley, an examination of four women who interpreted Salome around the turn of the last century. Wilde took his story from legend (not the Bible story), and invented the famous "Dance of the Seven Veils" for his French play _Salome_. It initiated the craze for "Salomania" and there was even a school for Salomes that churned out dancers to go into the variety halls. Bentley's introduction inserts herself into the history of striptease, and she gives a good account of ending her career as a ballerina and going onto the stage (just once?) as a stripper. She felt power; "... there was no victimization on either side of these footlights." It was a revelatory experience: "I was unmasked and, for a miraculous minute, thrilled in my body, unafraid of my life. I was in - for me - Paradise."Her research into how striptease originated centered on four women who had initially interpreted to the theatrical Salome. Maudie Durant was the sister of a serial killer, and escaped to Europe and to the stage as Maud Allan as a way to free herself from disgrace. She became "the least dressed dancer of our time," and she then portrayed Salome in 1906. She became involved in a ridiculous trial which she lost in large part because it was shown that she knew what a clitoris was. Ida Rubenstein was the child of Russian aristocrats, and the only Salome here who had few worries about money. She liked expensive, self-aggrandizing shows and ended up derided for her vanity. She did, however, sponsor artists of real ability; Ravel composed _Bolero_ for her. Everyone knows the name of the spy Mata Hari, but everyone knows wrong. She performed all over Europe, and took lovers; she had a special weakness for those in uniform. As a result, she did take money for spying, but didn't do any. She was framed and executed in France in 1917. With Colette, perhaps Bentley is guilty of over-application of her theme, because Colette never played Salome, although she did once perform on the same billing as Mata Hari. Unlike the other three women profiled here, Colette had a genuinely happy and long life. She graduated from virgin bride to lesbian, to happily married housewife, although she did seduce a former husband's son. She used her success in scandals, including her stage nakedness, to become an author whose fiction and memoirs have inspired far more readers than just Bentley.This is a book of a peculiar history, not only of four dancers, but of one period of the dance itself. None of them were very good dancers, but nakedness and scandal made up for that. All four reinvented themselves and used the Salome role for gains in power and money, although such gains were mostly temporary. None had a conventional life or marriage, and perhaps there is some sort of lesson in the sad ends most of them experienced. Bentley has not forced any didacticism from the four stories and her own. Her research and bibliography are good, and she has a light and amused way of telling the stories, full of detail. "Why did these women dance naked?" she asks, and the answers she gives, far from simple, but satisfying while undoubtedly incomplete, are wise and fun to read.

This is certainly a compellingly quick read. As far as its narrative style is concerned, the comparison to a spy novel is apt; despite the book's heft, you're likely to blow through it and enjoy the experience. However, the title is inaccurate. This book is less a "history of the FBI" than it is a history of J. Edgar Hoover via the Bureau's extra-legal black bag jobs, wire taps, and domestic surveillance of left-wing groups and American citizens. What's left out or glossed over is striking, and ultimately disappointing.The first 2/3 of "Enemies" details the rise of J. Edgar Hoover, but only in broad strokes of his most galling manipulations. The final third talks about the Bureau's attempts at reformation and reckoning with its history of secret intelligence following Hoover's death. Hoover's obsession with Communism is covered at length, as are his relationships with Presidents and Attorneys General who encouraged his (and the FBI's) collection of secret files on Americans. The FBI's role in installing a friendly-to-America government in the Dominican Republic gets some attention. Hoover's clashes with Robert Kennedy are discussed. But the Osage murders are never mentioned. Neither is the FBI's work fighting John Dillinger and organized crime. Japanese internment camps are never mentioned. When one of Hoover's successors is shocked to learn of what agents before him have done in the FBI's name, it dawned on me as a reader: so what ELSE was the FBI doing all those years? What did they THINK they were doing? Surely, if the Bureau had a large staff of agents who were unaware of COINTELPRO etc... what were all the FBO agents who weren't J. Edgar Hoover busy doing? There must be a large part of the FBI's story that's not being told in this book.As for what's glossed over, it's a jarring part of Weiner's writing. He spends significant time describing Hoover's clashes with Bobby Kennedy, but then John Kennedy's assassination is mentioned quickly in passing as the narrative moves on to LBJ. Tension rises as Nixon and his staff inch toward the inevitable, but then Nixon's resignation happens off-screen as well, as an off-hand detail within a paragraph about Carter. How events like these affect contemporary FBI agents is barely mentioned, other than as they relate to Hoover's narrative. True, there are plenty of other books that talk about these events in detail, but this is billed as a history of the Bureau... so as a reader, I got the feeling that perhaps some pages were torn from my copy. Even Hoover's obsession with Communists is hardly analyzed. The contradiction of Hoover's life-long motivation to preserve his idea of America while doggedly and knowingly breaking the law is not explored. His single-minded pursuit of Communists once other threats were more pressing is mentioned, but never explained or discussed. I wanted Wiener to pause from his narrative and make some sense of it. A history of the FBI that's so focused on this one aspect of its history never really lets me understand Hoover's perspective; instead, the author continually registers shock by the Bureau's blatant hypocrisy and the institutional silence that let it continue. And then he moves on.The ultimate effect of this book on me was that I enjoyed reading it, but periodically returned to Amazon to find other books about the FBI that would flesh out aspects of the story. Long as the book is, it's still too short and strangely narrow in scope.

I purchased this book because I was very interested in the FBI given the election issues involving Director Comey. The book has not disappointed. It is very informative and I have learned a lot. If you are interested in the history of the FBI you will enjoy reading this book. I found that understanding the history of the FBI really gave me more perspective in understanding the current situation.

A real world story about the FBI, where it came from, the man who developed it, the struggles between government officials and the director of the FBI, and its power. Reading it makes you wonder if anything has changed concerning our enemies (terrorist groups) and why America myst always be on guard,The book clearly shows that power can easily corrupt a moral and ethical person. Greed is usually the heart of the matter. This book should be required reading in high school.

The seamy side of the FBI, especially under Hoover. Truman had to deal with them right after he took office and he feared they would turn into a Gestapo (that's the word he used). He found that Hoover was tapping lots of DC politicians for political rather than legal reasons. Of course being published in 2013 it does not have the most recent shenanigans involving the Russia investigations, but this book demonstrates that the agency has always had some questionable practices. Reading this might turn you into a Libertarian, so be careful (haha)

Excellent review of power in Washington for the better part of the 20th century. An absolute must-read for historians and enthusiasts of political intrigue. For someone who lived though it, the book answers a lot of questions. Highly recommended.

It is a cautionary tale and is most relevant in light of current conditions.

It is a good book, there are a lot of idioms, but quite a few are missing (e.g. 'at the top of the game'). When I search for a specific phrase, I prefer using online Urban Dictionary, but as a non-native speaker, I often refer to the book just to learn a couple of more new idioms.The delivery of the book was quick but the cover was a little bit crumpled.

The book arrived in excellent condition. Highly recommended.

An interesting work for anyone who is interested in indigenous methods and theory, and who is forced to cite western philosophers anyway.

As much as I hated reading it while in a graduate course, I've kept revisiting it over and over while writing my dissertation. A truly unique text that best explains, even in its dense and esoteric language, theory's connections to the material world.

This is the kind of book you need to read with a notebook and highlighter and take the time to look into every single word and concept you're not familiar with. A lot of it seems like downright gibberish but if you start to delve into systems theory and chemistry and linguistics and all the disciplines they tie in, you start to see it's actually cogent and quite brilliant. But it's almost infuriatingly inaccessible. And I'm fairly well read in philosophy, psychology, sociology, etc

This is a dense, rich book, chock full of profoundly original ideas. If you like a challenge, and have not yet been stupefied by the edited-for-fifth-graders-fare that characterizes what usually passes for intellectual discourse in America, then read this or any other work by these authors. You will be able to feel your dendrites multiplying.

My first major in college was French linguistics almost 50 years ago and wrote my thesis on Marcel Proust. In the mean time, I read almost all the books by Jean-Paul Sartre. He was my hero when I was in college. Later on, I was hooked on Michel Foucault for 20 years or so, who led me to Deleuze's works. Translating Deleuze into English is almost impossible, because there are so many concepts that can only be expressed in French, but "Thousand Plateus (which should have been plateaux, but it sounds funny in English) is very well translated and even comprehensible! I believe that the collaboration between Deleuze and Guatari has created one of the deepest synchronic-diachronic philosophical expression of the every aspect of philosophical life. You can start reading it from any chapter and and end in any place. Yet, you get the totality of what we are going through as "humans" at this point in our history. If you don't read much philosophical works, this is a treat for your mind.

A must read. Changed my way of thinking.

Deleuze and Guattari are, without a doubt, two stars of critical theory. Beyond the substance of the text, the form is something to discuss in and of itself. Highly recommend

New, unseen historical photos track the progression of the Cobra to world class status. Dave's insight regarding the people that contributed to this American success story (even office staff) gives credit where credit is due. Regardless of how many Carroll Shelby books and magazine articles you have read, you will find new and interesting facts highlighted by great images in this book.

Dave Friedman's photos tell the story of the early years. The book is full of behind the scenes shots along with race action. I like it from cover to cover.
