I LOVE it when a scientist "gets it!" And Sondra Barrett, PhD GETS IT! She sees the mind, body, spirit connection that many others dismiss. This book looks at cell-life from a medical perspective, while encompassing healing modalities. At times it theorizes healing methodolgies and suggestions to help expand your thinking in certain directions. It also provides meditations to expand your awareness. Overall, the book provides: Information, Reflection (questions to ask self and ponder), Exploration (exercise/practice/meditation), Definition, and Detailed explanation of cells.The preface begins with a quote from Albert Einstein, "Everyone who is seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the universe - a spirit vastly superior to that of man."In this forward thinking and thought-provoking 2013 book, Sondra views the body's inner intelligence with both the eyes of a scientist and the heart of a shaman. Her 360 degree approach to acknowledge there is more to life than science and "proof" of everything is a refreshing walkabout from the skeptic's view of double-blind studies only. Based on her training, experience, research, studies, Sondra takes you from her once scientific only beliefs to her expanded knowledge base to include the effects of the mind and heart on healing. Her own scientific mind was amazed when she first noticed the potential of the mind in wellness, including delays, remissions, and cures. The more she experienced, the more she widened her perspective on healing.Sondra provides 209 pages of information, + a 9 page appendix (personal energy mapping graph and 8 pages of helpful Qigong movements), + 6 pages of reference notes + 26 pages of reference material/books, + 4 pages of suggested reading, + a 17 page index, + the author page. She also provides 14 color plates, including a stunningly beautiful computer graphic of DNA. She also includes 26 illustrations, including the basic architecture of a cell on page 19. Throughout the book, she references various studies for those of you who are looking for the scientific explanations.Her left-brained credentials: She has a degree in biochemistry from the University of Illinois Medical School, post-doctorial training in immunology and hematology at the University of California Medical School. She continued on the faculty at the latter school for over 10 years. She also worked with children with life-threatening illnesses while developing basic cancer research and supportive care.Her right-brained credentials: She studied expressive arts, alternative energy practices, and shamanism. She also won awards for some of her special photography (photo micrograms). She does publications, presentations, workshops, and lectures.As a Reiki Master, I found this book inspirational, to say the least, that a well educated and experienced scientist sees the connection. Once I saw the cell's architecture (p. 19), I was better able to see it in the mind's eye. I felt compelled to meditate on my billions of cells and just thank them for all they have provided throughout my life, keeping me healthy, fending off illness, etc. I was truly amazed at the intense feeling that I was floating in peace and love, that I experienced almost immediately. That was all the proof I needed to know that my cells "heard" me and appreciated the acknowledgement.BTW - I also bought a copy of this book for an engineer-minded, "double-blind study" thinking, doubting-Thomas friend whom I call Mr. Spock. I hope this book helps him to see the Light :)
Good book about one biochemist's open-mindedness, creativity and spiritual growth over the years. Dr. Barrett introduces some interesting studies related to our cells, such as Dr. James Pennebaker's (UT-Austen) work on the cells and confession (journaling). She also mentions the pioneering breakthrough work of Dr. Bruce Lipton on cells. She gives some reliable scientific info about our cells which I liked. Was not enthralled with the writing style--the book is a bit dry, but there is certainly good information. It made me appreciate and understand the lessons in the Rosicrucian Monographs (AMORC) at a deeper level. Frankly, there is a lot more helpful information fairly early in the Degrees of the AMORC Monographs on the cells and many other spiritual topics.
For people who seek to be explore their mystical side with someone who cherishes the amazing progress science has made and is an exponent of the scientific method, and yet do so in an engaging rather than pedantic manner, Secret of your Cells (SOYC) is a gem. And more so because published researchers at the intersection of these three conditions are as yet so few. Barrett succeeds in interleaving science with the mystical and in demonstrating different, equally compelling, and oddly-reinforcing perspectives on the same reality. She is a better scientist and shaman than a writer in the sense that one feels her obviously prodigious corpus of knowledge and personal experience could have been utilized and articulated better. Nevertheless, as part of a minuscule vanguard highlighting the advent of a bio-centric century -- people like Michio Kaku and Robert Lanza -- she deserves special applause. In SOYC, you will obtain some fascinating insights into the community of trillions of cells that constitute your body and will learn scientific research-backed meditation techniques that enable one to experience joy and heal sickness in oneself and others.
This book will open your eyes to the beauty and sacredness of your body, especially the cells. In beautiful, almost poetic, language and a scientist's eye, Sondra has written a book we would all be better for reading. It isn't just about our body intelligence, but the exquisite detail of it's structure. I will never, ever look at myself the same way. The gratitude for the artistic forms that live inside (and on our surface) knows no bounds. Those who think of their cells as ho-hum, or even in the case of disease as the enemy, will have to do a complete about face and bow down in reverence to what can only be the creation of the supreme intelligence. As you can tell, I highly, highly recommend this book. The author includes a myriad of different ways to get in touch with what lives in and as us.
"Secrets of Your Cells" by Dr. Sondra Barret is a beautiful, enlightening, and "scientific" book on the mystical, spiritual dimensions and properties of our body's cells. Dr. Barret very clearly and concisely puts into words what many authors have been attempting to do for decades, namely, to describe and elucidate in an easy-to-grasp manner a very complex and scientific subject to the "normal" layperson who may interested in understanding the inter-relationship between hardcore Science and Spirituality. Thank you Dr. Barret for writing such a enlightening, heart-felt, scientific book. I thoroughly enjoyed the read!
Glad I could learn so much about cells by reading this book!The most important lesson was how each cell might carry knowledge that the brain has stored. However, I have learned many other surprising facts and theories and am so glad I read this book. It was slow-going at first, not like an easy to read novel. However, I kept with it. So glad I did. The reading of it got so much easier as I got into it.It has changed my life in one way. I now want to take care of my cells by giving them less stress and to slow down a bit to help them relax.
