This book is gorgeous! It is haunting, terrifying, and absolutely beautiful. You can tell it was created with love. The photographs are stunning, the story is heartbreaking, and it memorializes the resolve and strength of people who would not be kept down. I love the layout and the bright, cheerful pages at the end of the book. It's on display on my piano.

Amazing book! The research and beautiful photos, especially at night, gives us an idea what the brave "passengers" going north went through and saw along the way. How brave they were, as well as the people along the way who helped them.How appropriate and what a coup to have Andrew Young, civil rights activist, UN Ambassador and Mayor, write such an elegant forward.I cried through the entire book, filled with such emotion. Despite some other reviewers comments , I got it. To me, the only way to present the photos was in darkness, as I Imagine the UGR slaves saw it. Superb and highly recommended.

All the photos were dark and I understood why. I just could not enjoy it as much as I thought I would.

I live in NE Indiana where one of these houses was photographed. Interesting but was a little disappointed in the quality of most of the pictures. And the information provided was limited. Still, would probably buy it again!

a bit long winded at times

For those who enjoy historical non-fiction combined with adventure, hardship and redemption (eventually), this is a great read. The story follows the life & times of James Porter, a Londoner transported to Australia as a convict in the early 1800's. Although he undoubtedly committed crimes, the fact he loved the theater, was an accomplished singer and came from terrible family circumstances in the first place, creates a forgivable character.The story itself is incredible. Surviving many years in the penal colony (today's Tasmania) - and many unsuccessful escape attempts, he eventually manages to steal a ship that he and a band of 9 other convicts sail east across some of the wildest oceans in the world to reach Chile. This was an incredible survival story in itself, however the next part based in Chile, for me is at least as compelling.I like the way the story (and fate) of James Porter kept unfolding right until the end.

After reading this book I realised how little I knew about the individual characters that formed the fabric of Australia's penal colony. At school you learn the basics but this tale made the times come alive, especially with its detailed descriptions of the conditions. James Porter was transported to Australia as a convict in the 1800s. While the conditions he lived in were horrendous, he never gave up trying to escape, no matter what the punishment he endured when caught. The fact that he and a band of other prisoners decided to steal a boat and sail to Chile is incredible - as is their journey and the events that awaited them. Porter's resilience and defiance shines through and certainly made me want to find out more about the times.

This is exactly why I have a Kindle! Every time I buy a new pair of sneakers, I'm reminded of The Sound of Summer Running and they become Royal Crown Cream Sponge Paralightfoot Tennis Shoes. Then I remember my Jr/Sr HS English teacher, Mr Trinks, who read us these stories with so much enthusiasm. Ray Bradbury was his favorite author and he read us many amazing stories, like The Fog Horn and A Sound of Thunder. I first heard these over fifty years ago and they are just as wonderful now as they were then. Even more so, because they bring back a simpler time, before computers, before cell phones, even before Kindles. This is a great collection of Bradbury's gems and I'm going to savor every one of them. Then raise a glass to Mr Arthur Trinks who instilled a love of reading on some very impressionable youngsters.

Someone else recommended this book to me in an odd way...they mentioned rendering reading a story by Ray Bradbury in school about a time machine and hunting dinosaurs. I had to read it. It was Truly great story, but my favorite ended up being "The Time Machine". I won't spoil it for anyone, but of all the wonderful stories in this book, that one touched me.

Bought mainly since I had remembered the short story A Sound of Thunder, which I had read as a child. This story was as good as I had remembered, but the rest of the stories in the book, I am not as pleased with. There was one story in particular, that had a racial theme, that I had found a bit disturbing. Would probably not buy again.

This is one of the first Bradbury books that I ever owned. I purchased the digital edition so that I could more easily carry the story around with me. Once again I have to sing the praises of one of the most incredible Science Fiction writers ever. This edition, and even more importantly the stories inside are phenomenal.

Ray and I "met" in 1969 when I took "R is for Rocket" out of my high school library. We have been good friends ever since. If you don't know Ray this is a great intro. Short stories are his specialty, The titles may throw you off but " The Martian Chronicles" and "The Illustrated Man" are also excellent collections of "shorts". I would have to say Ray helped me learn to read just for fun, thanks Ray, and God bless.

In my youth, I'd read "Fahrenheit 451" and some other Bradbury books. I had never explored his short stories. This was a birthday gift and was enthralling.I began with the titular piece, "A Sound of Thunder."The other stories are well written, timeless and entertaining. A nice addition to my library.

I had to wade through some older stories, some were pretty good. Reading the "sound of thunder" was worth the time investment - a good story.

I have been buying a SI swimsuit calendar every year now for 26 years. Great calendar, not as large as the deluxe edition but it has the dates listed in a traditional grid which for me makes the calendar useful as opposed to listing the dates down the side. Also like the fact that you can remove the date section, so if there's a month that you don't want to look at, you don't have to! Lol.

I love the production quality of sports illustrated swimsuit edition. The ladies so beautiful and the locations are all wonderful. This is high quality photo calendar. And I enjoy looking at this daily. Will definitely order again.

I have a better suggestion. Read "The Nature of Personal Reality" by Jane Roberts published in 1974. You can get the book for free and the depth of knowledge you will find there will blow away most so called gurus today. Enjoy. I wonder how ancient the idea is that we create our own reality through what we believe. I suspect it is as old as religion itself.

This book is a little hard to review because I have mixed opinions. I found the discussion of how much our thinking is influenced by cultural and societal rules to be very helpful, as was the discussion of the importance of balance in life. On the other hand, the constant name dropping got old, as did the repeated plugs for Mr. Lakhiani's company. The many description of his business success and his perfect wife and perfect life and how you can emulate him also started to sound like an old Kathie Lee Christmas special (for those old enough to remember her), although in his defense he was suggesting approaches that other people can follow. Many of the main themes of the book- meditation, gratitude, forgiveness, compassion, love, looking inward, being resistant to the turmoil of life- are not original and seem to come right out of ancient Buddhist, Stoic, or Epicurian teachings.So overall I think people's opinion of this book will vary a lot and will depend on how useful they find the valuable parts, how familiar they already are with Buddhism and Stoicism, and how much they want to learn about Mr. Lakhiani's life and company.

I was fooled by all the 5 star reviews and chose this book, thinking it was really something interesting and different that would inspire me. While the book does have some good content, I did not find it to be original at all, and did find it to be annoyingly fluffed up with hype and repetition. The first three chapters are almost 100% "how this book is structured and wow is this book amazing" kind of fluff, which you should simply skip. The rest of the book still contains an annoying amount of self-praising hype, repetitive stories about Richard Branson, Tony Robbins, etc, which I did not find inspiring or interesting at all, and an overall emphasis on entrepreneurial "how to succeed in business without really trying" ideas. In some parts of the book, the level of repetition is almost insulting. There's a part where he says, almost verbatim about 5 times, that you have to become happy before you can really achieve your goals. You can't just sweat and stress your way to success. I felt increasingly frustrated by all this repetition until I just gave up and decided I was not going to continue with the book.

Nothing new in this latest addition to the "self-help" and "leadership" genre of books. Good marketing and a nicely done clean cover caught my attention as one that is an avid reader - particularly of books focused on self-development. However, this one left me disappointed even after two reads. I also take issue with several of the strategies, but for the sake of brevity will focus on the "brules" and "blissipline" concepts. The author encourages readers to question rules; which on the surface is good, but the presumption being made is that all of the readers operate from the same level of morality and wisdom, which would give them the good judgment to pick and choose what works (at least for them). Simply, some societal conventions and mores serve a valid, meaningful and timeless purpose. Living within the "law" to make it simple is often the best path to freedom and not everyone has the ability or maturity to alter and redefine what is best for themselves or how they may interface with society on the whole. The concept of "blissipline" is another one that I have difficulty with as reality dictates that sometimes, despite the best efforts and intentions, life is just plain sour. There is struggle as a fundamental basis of life and usually, this results in goodness. Pursuing happiness and "learning" to find the (greater) good in everything, despite its value assignment as positive, negative or neutral is not only the mark of a mature human being, but is both important to the health of the individual and society as a whole. The notion of living one's "bliss" as a way of life can easily slip into the realm of the self-centered and insular. Where true "happiness" is enduring despite outcomes, "bliss" tends to be temporary (i.e., tied to a specific experience like the birth of a healthy child or getting a new job) and is not practical to attain, let alone maintain for most people once the luster rubs away. Nothing exciting - just a mix of new age humanist philosophies aimed at "millenials" and eastern traditions. The endless name dropping through the book is also tiresome and diminishes the authors credibility.

This book is nothing more than a ploy to get you to join their organization.

I guess that if you've never read anything on the Law of Attraction, goal setting, mindfulness or business success, this book may be of some benefit to you. The author is occasionally witty but for a person who has a half-million subscribers, this book is remarkably dull and lacking fresh insights. It was also a bit annoying to keep reading (six times?) about the invitation-only retreat he attended on Branson's private island as if he needs to convince us (and maybe himself) that others regard him as credible. As an alternative, I suggest Elisha Goldstein's "Uncovering Happiness." Lastly, I wish that some of these Internet millionaires would just be honest and emphatically state that unexplainable luck also had a good part to do with their success instead of crafting elaborate cause and effect narratives in retrospect which supposedly explain how they did it. (On this, read Taleb's "Black Swan.") Yes, there are principles to be followed, mindsets to be embraced and disciplines that will push you in the right direction, but sometimes you also just get lucky (regardless of your ability to "bend reality"). That doesn't mean that the typical reader will ever be able to replicate it in their lives.

This Canadian woman fell in love with the north and its people. She took her kayak on a long perilous trip where many would fear to go. What courage. She tells about her trip and the many places she visited and the people she met. She continued her trip alone after the man along on the trip proved hard to get along with. But she continued. She was planning more trips to her favorite part of the world but it was not to be. Though she did not live to continue kayaking she did what she wanted. She enjoyed life to the fullest and was not afraid to go where others would be afraid. What a terrific lady. Her health was not good but that would not deter her from living life.

Excellent book and surpasses her early traveling companion's book.

She was an incredible women. This journey she has shared about her life is a inspiration to all women searching for their inner strengths.

Our entire family shared this book and we still gifted it to a friend down south. Good story and highly recommend it as gifts.

Interesting book, I was up north flying when she did her summers and came through the place I was staying at but missed her. An extraordinary women to be doing a solo trip like that in the conditions she had. She was incredibly tough minded. It was so sad she passed away so young with so much left to do

A must read for lady kayakers!

"Kabloona" is a well-written and interesting story about an interesting lady who did an interesting paddle with some questionable partners. This I've read twice while her partner's I did not finish once. Her paddles in this area took root and she returned after to spend time in native villages that are as 3rd world as anywhere in the world. I reread it just before paddling in the Pelly Bay area and one in our group spotted the very small marker on the Ihoktok beach. Just a small plaque in a pretty spot along the shore with the tundra stretching up and away in the distance. No mention of her in Kugaaruk itself, but her presence would have had to have improved the community. I'd like to read her second book but have not found it available anywhere.

The book is a pretty good overview of Luxembourg. It has a wide variety of photos, including buildings, people, and landscapes.The photos range in size from 4 photos to a page up to 1 photo that spans across 2 pages. The photo quality is above average. Each photo has a description of a few sentences. Overall the book is about 75% photos and about 25% text.Having seen a number of photo books about Luxembourg, this is definitely one of the better ones.
