I read a review for the Rand McNally Vermont Road Atlas wherein the reviewer dumped the Rand McNally mid-trip and picked up the JIMAPCO Vermont Road Atlas and recommended it above the former. I'm so glad I went with this Road Atlas - it served us very well on our 5 day driving tour of Vermont. We took many small back-roads, some only dirt tracks, and never got lost. The map is well indexed, easy to read, and laid out well. In the city we opted to use our iPhones for turn-by-turn convenience and quickly picked up the map when service was not available. It was a winning combination and made for an enjoyable and adventurous trek through Vermont. I will definitely consider JIMAPCO atlases on future tours.

A GPS is nice to get you where you are going, but this road atlas lets you explore places you have never been. I have been enjoying taking the road less traveled to get where I am going and this atlas has been just what I needed. It keeps me from going in circles and helps me find covered bridges, wildlife management areas, hiking trails and other interesting things along the ways. Just what I have been missing in my travels

Very good maps that lack some detail and color. The spiral binding allows youto lay it flat on your lap or desk. Very useful when your GPS can't "see" the satellitessuch as an overcast day. Overall very good - I can't find a better one.

Mann rose to prominence with Immediate Family, a collection of photographs of her children that some saw as emotionally direct and others found disturbingly erotic. In this book, Mann, inspired by "a cache of glass negatives...of familiar local places," set off with her camera through the South, using eighteenth century photographic techniques to capture the "radical light of the American South," and the results are fascinating. In Georgia, a column of leaves dissipates into a luminous mist; in Virginia, a scumbled field with an empty cart in the distance suggests a test shot by Matthew Brady. Many of these photographs are startling in their intimations of violence: in the section called "Deep South," Mann depicts the thick shaft of a venerable tree with a wound-like, horizontal slash near the trunk. Mann has also included the inevitable mistakes involved with such a tricky process: indiscernible unhappy accidents and washed-out near-abstractions. This is brave but puzzling. In one of her short essays, Mann writes that the Southern dusk makes "the landscape soft and vague, as if inadequately summoned by some shiftless deity, casually neglectful of the details." A god may enjoy such prerogatives, but shouldn't artists be more mindful? Mann photographs with a visceral awareness of who she is. She is unafraid of opening herself up and showing what is inside of her.She is from the deep South, and this book is an adventure for her as she lovingly captures the heart of the part of the country in which she has been raised, in all it's beauty and ugliness. Because of her antique techniques, each of the images is suffused with an "otherness" which gave me a profound sense of place. Being from the West Coast, I know little of the South, except for all of the prevailing views of it. This book was breathtaking for me, and I felt the love that Mann has for her land. I see it in a different way, now.Everything Mann touches becomes uplifted. She has examined her family, her husband as he deteriorates physically, dead bodies, racism, and the physical beauty of the South. She has written one of the best autobiographies I've ever read. She is uncompromising about her subjects, photographs what she sees, and tells her story with unflinching honesty. She reveals what most of us would hide and hope that it never came to light, and does so with humor. She has a quirkiness that is apparent, and probably annoys those she must deal with on a regular basis.She is one of the finest artists of the Century.

This book was incredibly intriguing when I first picked it up as a college student in 2008. As a professional photographer for more than 10 years, I am blown away by the richness of this collection of emotive images. The usage of a Large Format camera, and a number of alternative processes result in images that are both novel yet somehow transcend time. Prior to this book, I never had the desire to explore the Deep South, but that all changed... 10 years after first picking this book up, I'm incredibly happy to own it and to continue to be inspired by it. Sally Mann is an artist through and through, and is as talented a writer as she is a photographer.

Sally Mann has such a large body of work all of which is distinguished, and it seems almost blasphemous to pick out what is her "best." But my viewing this book, I feel a certain power that transcends meaning - these images are a combination of grace and power. The book on the whole contains a complexity of mood and emotion that is ghostly, historical - but undeniably present and real.The quality of her images - (and I don't know how she does it...indeed content aside Mann seems to hold technical camera skills that Providence bestowed upon her alone) - gives her images a wonderful sense of depth so that one almost feels as if they are standing there, by the water's edges, for instance, while at the same time in a landscape of dreams. In a class of herself in modern art, for me her landscapes here bring to mind the work of the J.M.W. Turner for their combination of visual depth while still holding impressionist qualities.All the images are great. The ones I took particular note on, though, are on pages39, 41, 51, 61, 69, 71, 81

I really wanted to like this book because I am from the same area as Sally Mann. I was so looking forward to her beautiful photos of the South. However, the majority of the photos were unrecognizable except as experiments with photo lenses and light. That's fine if it is classified as an art book, but as a homesick Southerner looking for spectacular photos that Ms. Mann usually delivers, this is definitely not the book to purchase. If you want an experimental photography book, you might like it.

Bought this as a textbook for a freshman writing class at U of M but I'm so glad I did! it's a very spooky and moody book, especially once you've done your research on Mann and learnt that she was inspired to create such a book after a man had been shot down and bled into her yard. I found the bits of writing she includes about some photos sort of trivial. Though it is nice to learn the story of the photo, I like to imagine such new stories more.

This book was purchased as a gift for my son and it was better than we expected. My son has admired Sally Mann's work for awhile and enrolled in a college course which taught the same techniques. He was thrilled when he received this book...it contains some of her best work.

My daughter asked me to get her this book. She is into photography...I thank her for giving me the chance to get to know this amazing photographer and in particular this book. This is a collection of nature photos that often look like scenes from a dream. It is a real work of art - intriguing, poetic and inspiring.

This book is more of a thriller than a romance. As the subtitle points out, it's more about the death of the stalker than it is about the romance between Frankie and Carrie. Of course, it I were writing it, Carrie would be named Johnnie, because I just can't resist a musical allusion.The really cool part is the way Frankie defends herself and her property. I would like to have seen more details of the traps she and Gerry set for the stalker. And the stalker was two-dimensional most of the time, although there were a few scenes where he actually interacted with secondary characters as a real person would have. The stalker is a boogie-man, as all classic horror/thriller demands, so it would never do to make him a real three-dimensional character.Even without Ms MacLeod's patented romance scenario, this is a well-written and exciting story. The protagonists endure the anxiety of being stalked and attacked, but their courage and determination are enough to win the day. It's an up-beat story for a thriller, and I loved it.

I really loved this novel by Ms MacLeod. She really knows how to entertain with a well written story. Carrie found herself fleeing from a stalker. In trying to give him the slip Carrie ends up in a snow storm with her car in a ditch. Fearing her stalker will find her she starts running through the woods. As if things are not bad enough she runs into a wolf pack. This is when Frankie and her two dogs, Rick and Jane enter the story, now it is up to you to buy the novel to read the rest of the story. Hope you enjoy as much as I did.

I have enjoyed all of Prudence MacLeods books and have looked forward to a new lesbian themed book from her. She didn't disappoint and I liked the characters and the story.

I liked this read it was fast paced and suspenseful.

I bought this book just after midnight this morning and by God it is so well written, the character just draw you in. I couldn't stop reading till I was done. It does make you wonder are there really errors like some in this book taking place in the real world. I so enjoyed reading this. Excellent job ladies, and yes I bought others too.lol

Deals almost exclusively with structural engineering and even more specifically, bridges. Written in an academic style that is a tough slog. Illustrations are tiny and blurry (partly because they are mostly from very old texts). I came away with a deeper appreciation for Galileo, but other than that, pretty disappointed.

Not exactly what I expected. But interesting

Got this for my engineering 190 course on how errors and judgement's are how problems can be solved in the engineering world.

I read this book when it first came out in 1994, and have just finished re-reading it.I can attest that the lessons which emerge from Dr. Petroski's study of structural engineering failures have proved valuable throughout my career, particularly when designing bridges which pushed the envelope. Indeed, any engineer aiming to be innovative in any way needs to temper that laudable ambition with a serious and even somber study of how things have gone wrong in the past, and this book is an excellent vehicle for that purpose.Beyond the study of engineering failure, as a fringe benefit, the book also provides nice discussion of important episodes from the history of structural engineering. Such historical perspective is usually lacking among engineers both in practice and academia. Yet this is a subject which engineers would ideally be exposed to throughout their careers, not just during the leisurely and retrospective years of retirement.To give a balanced review, allow me to point out a few minor negatives. First, the writing style is sometimes a bit stuffy, and a more plainspoken style would have made the book more appealing. Second, there's a good bit of repetition throughout the book; shortening and focusing the book would have improved it. Third, the case studies mostly involve bridges; this will obviously please bridge engineers, but will reduce appeal for readers seeking a more diverse range of case studies.In sum however, the book is an excellent and valuable contribution from Dr. Petroski, and we should be especially thankful that it exists considering the lack of literature on this important topic, especially at a scholarly level.Highly recommended for bridge engineers and other structural engineers at all stages of their careers - indeed, a "must read."

This is the first Petroski book I've read. I was expecting something different. The cases are all valid design issues and are informative but there are too few. I do think engineering students need something to widen their viewpoints about design thinking. There's a learning curve of failed designs between school and proficiency. If I wrote a design process course, this would be the first 2 weeks reading. Then we'd get into the details. I can't say I'll read this again. But if I ran into an engineering student who didn't understand design process or why mistakes happen, I'd suggest it.

Good book for someone new to riding. Read this and take your local motorcycle safety training course and you'll be far more likely to avoid road rash and enjoy your riding.

Given the rave reviews, I had very high expectations for this book. While most of the important basics are covered, the book suffers from poor organization, repetitiveness, and undue wordiness. You have to wade through a lot of prefatory verbiage to get the key points, and that makes this difficult to use as a reference. I assume this is because the material was originally written for a magazine column, where chattiness and longwindedness are virtues. I was hoping for a very thorough, detailed, and efficient presentation, and there is room for improvement on those scores here. Most of the photos and diagrams are good, and the advice is all sound, but what is needed is a rational and ruthless editor. I'll keep looking. 3.5 stars.

I have ridden bikes for over 40 years, learning on a small 3 speed with a clutch at age 9. I learned so much, things I hadn't even thought of thinking about. Now in my fifties riding a large cruiser, I am much more concerned about safety with today's increased traffic and distracted drivers. Like good safety equipment, this is a worthwhile investment to spend the time to read this. It may save your life. Not the most exciting title, but it's exactly what this book is. I have read other books on cycling, but none have the level of detail of all the physics and forces that are behind the art of riding a motor with 2 wheels down the road. True confidence on the road comes from knowledge and experience. This book gives you knowledge, and using the info will help keep you safer as you rack up the miles gaining experience.

This book contains complete instructions for riding a motorcycle safely and confidently on public roads. It walks through every aspect of riding with plenty of common sense, surprising data, physics, and advice.However, I find the author's tone unhelpful. He appears to imagine his audience to be overconfident men who have unreflectively developed bad riding habits over the years. I'm sure that many motorcyclists fit that description, but many of us are just beginners who want to ride well. So cutesy condescension like "If you intend to teach yourself how to brake more efficiently, be very wary of the skills of your instructor" (p. 84) and "[Y]ou might want to close the bathroom door, stare at that rider in the mirror, and see if he looks like one of those folks who can't quite put their bikes where they want to" (p. 88) gets old quickly. The subtext of these unnecessary jabs is that motorcycling is a boys' activity that requires you to prove yourself in the face of persistent put-downs.Again, the book is full of crucial information—probably everything you need to know, as long as you practice. But I think the author could easily have also made it enjoyable for everyone to read, and he did not.

Been through the motorcycle safety class. This book reemphasizes a lot of the class. Book helpful using practical advice and pictures. But also had some real pearls like "How do you tell if a vehicle is moving?" Answer: look at the front wheel of the vehicle. The hubcap rotation will tell you quicker if it is moving and how fast. As a new rider in an urban environment, this book was very helpful for my own safety. Highly recommend.

I purchased this as part of my preparation to get back into biking after a 12 year hiatus and 12 more years on my biological clock. While experienced riders might just gloss over sections of this book, it is likely worthwhile to read every page. I put a lot of stock in that old saying "Experience keeps a dear school, for fools shall learn in no other." And this is a good book for the new or inexperienced rider to read and absorb, and go on the road to apply the lessons. Enough said. Those who practice safe riding religiously will know what I mean. Buy this for yourself for a tune up, or for that aspiring new rider for their future riding enjoyment.

This is a really good book for all drivers, not just riders. The skills discussed are suitable for all drivers. There is plenty of rider specific content but there are also lots of tips and tricks that I learned so long ago I forgot about them and lots of stuff I did not know. I wanted to teach my daughter how to drive but after reading this book I realized that having her read this book and taking a professional course might be a better idea. If you are thinking of getting a bike or even if you already have one this book is a must read. I recommend this book to every rider or driver. Hands down a valuable tool for all motor vehicle operators but especially riders.

I gave this book five stars because part of the book was informative. Yes, he goes on and on about things when I just want to know what to do when I find myself facing crosswinds that threaten to knock the bike from under me with forces that resemble me smacking a brick wall. Well, he finally does tell you and the information is relevant, detailed, and helpful.I tell you, I have seen videos that taught me a great deal, but when you are in a location that limits your ability to watch a simple DVD, is great to learn even more from a book dedicated at the very thing that you just love to do, ride your bike.That said, the book is big. Not that it has a huge amount of pages. The dimensions are huge. So taking it on a bike trip might be cumbersome. The pages are beautiful.. why? They really are thick, shiny, and well made. The book is just high quality stuff.Well, hope this helped. See you on the road.. well, on the bike, not on the road.. well, the bike should be on the road with you on the bike not you on the road with no bike. Glad we sorted that out.

As a co-author of the new edition, I'm obviously a bit biased, but I think this book occupies a unique position in this field as a broad advanced-undergraduate/beginning-graduate introduction to photonic crystals and light in periodic media, focusing on timeless fundamentals and richly illustrated with examples of many different structures. Compared to the first edition, it is greatly expanded and improved, with almost every chapter seeing significant revisions and several entirely new chapters; the second edition is roughly double the length of the first.However, the main reason I am posting here is that you don't need to take my word for it; the publishers have allowed us to post a PDF of the entire book online for no cost, so you can determine whether it is useful to you before purchasing the paper version (beautifully printed in full color). See ab-initio.mit.edu/book (where you can also find errata etcetera).Compared to classic textbooks like Hecht or Jackson, this book occupies a somewhat different ground. It is not concerned with geometric optics (where the wavelength is small compared to the structure) or with the handful of geometries that can be solved almost completely analytically (vacuum, planes, cylinders, and spheres). Rather, it deals with the vast array of problems in nanophotonics where the wavelength is comparable to the structure, and especially with periodic (or partially periodic) "crystalline" structures. In these cases, although completely analytical solutions are usually impossible, the book explains how there are more general principles such as symmetry and linear algebra that reveal the fundamental structure and behavior of light in such media. The book uses these principles to explain the most important optical properties of these structures, from confinement of light in 3d band gaps to periodic dielectric waveguides and optical fibers. It also introduces the powerful tool of temporal coupled-mode theory to design devices by coupling waveguides and microcavities.

This visually attractive book is also very informative, particularly for someone with a background in solid-state physics and eletromagnetism. The reformulation of Maxwell's equations as a Hamiltonian theory was a very interesting insight for someone (me, OK?) with a traditional physics graduate school education. Another interesting insight is that scalar diffraction theory works when polarization effects are unimportant, and polarization effects are unimportant when the periodicity is large compared to the wavelength of light. A third is the development of the eigenvalue as the mode-weighted average over the bulk indices of refraction of the materials composing the structure.The mathematical development is just perfect to get the main ideas across without burying the reader. There are entrees into the literature for more advanced developments.

The authors give great physical explanations with just the right amount of mathematical rigor. The analogy with quantum mechanics is made continuously through the text which helps with intuition. This book is definitely going to be a classic.

Great easy to read, conceptually covers relevant main and background material, very colorful supporting pictures and plots, written by experts in this field.

First, a disclaimer: I am a graduate student working within the research group of two of the authors (JDJ & SGJ). I used the first edition of this book (as did many other researchers) extensively when being first introduced to this field and have been able to compare it with this most recent edition given my familiarity with both editions. The 2nd edition is a significant improvement over the 1st edition, for many reasons: 1) the content is further polished and well presented (owing in part to the emphasis on clarity in communication placed within our group), 2) the figures, equations, and fonts are much more readable than before and 3) there are at least three new chapters that provide timely information on emerging subfields (periodic dielectric waveguides, photonic crystal slabs and photonic crystal fibers). An extensive (and expanded) bibliography and appendix (with an extra section on computational photonics) supplement the main text well. The book is at least twice as thick as the 1st edition with new and updated content and is exquisitely bound & illustrated. Indeed, it is true that a free copy of this book has been posted on the authors' website, but owning a hard copy is a valuable reference as well. The 2nd edition is not simply a superficial revision of the 1st, it is a much needed improvement for a field that has seen a tremendous amount of growth in the intervening years of the books' first publication.
