It's Heidi Klum...Naked, in a huge book. What's not to like if that is what you are assuming the book is. The photography is good, Rankin is a good photographer without doubt. The variety of images are good, some artsy, others not, nothing that screams "trying too hard". Paper is a very nice heavyweight matte finish paper stock. A very different look than typical glossy paper which is what most books would have. I personally like it and is the type of paper I print my "high end art stuff" on when I want to look impressive and artsy. The cover and binding seem fine as expected for a book of this cost. The front cover image is basically a photo glued onto the cover, which is cool, but hope doesn't peal up over time and usage. Some have desired Heidi to reveal a bit "more" in some shots, and hard to argue, but in a way a good teasing is better in the long run so I don't discount it for that reason. Only complaint is I wish Heidi had started creating these style images at a much younger age so the book would cover her throughout her career, from beginning to present day. Oh well.

This book kept my 10 years old's interest so he finished it quickly. The adult version is already simplified but this book comes from an even more basic angle.

As you can see, I screwed up! Other than it taking a longgggg time to receive - it was ordered about two weeks before Christmas, did not get it until a week after Xmas, my friend is enjoying it - he jokes he thinks in retrospect that the "adult" version would not have been as easy to understand!!

I thought it was a normal book, but being a young readers edition i was initially a bit miffed, then i took a look at the description and discovered it clearly written!I am content with everything, A very efficient delivery period and would buy from the US againM

This is a Fantastic Read for young kids. Our daughter read it and really got it. It's Clear and concise. This should be required reading, IMO.

Don't be fooled by 1star commenters, they didn't read the book, only black listed because don't like AL Gore. Growing up in the Westside of Cleveland in the 1950's, I had many chances to meet people who were displaced Europeans settling in America. In fact there were so many of these people a colloquial and derogatory term was placed to identify these people being the phrase "DP". In essence all these people were trying to do was to seek a new life in America. Little did I know of any of their stories in which they had to endure to get to the shores of the promised new land. One such story is Marian Katin's graphic depiction of her mother and herself fleeing Budapest under Nazi rule in 1944. The very fact that they were Jewish as late as 1944 under Nazi rule gives one the sense that it took a long time for some Nazi occupied countries to be affected by the genocidical programs inherent to this regime. Katin's story which tells of the Nazi terror and later the Soviet invasion shows the true plight of how people lost their homes and in many cases their very lives in the collateral damage of war. Katin's images and narrative show the true emotional and psychological scars of what transpired. The book shows a true and uncensored depiction of true events of a world gone mad. People acting under stress conditions show both their humanistic qualities to help mankind no matter what country they were from and on the other hand people acting selfishly and thinking only of themselves. This story is of people being people under the stress of a world at war caused by political minds seeking their own selfish ends. This graphic story should be added to all the serious historical accumulation of World War II studies showing what this war was truly about. This book is actual history shown in the graphic genre which deserves our serious attention. Very well done and deserving a high five star rating.

The title of Miriam Katin's graphic memoir, We Are On Our Own, is the subtext and conclusion of the story of her survival in Nazi-occupied Hungary. It's one of the most powerful and relentless memoirs I've ever read, graphic or otherwise. For sheer honesty, it ranks right up there with Wiesel's Night, Bechdel's Fun Home, and Sylvia Plath's Bell Jar.Katin's recollections concern the final weeks of WWII, when the Nazis occupying Hungary know that the game is nearly over and the Soviet Army is advancing. Miriam, who's a girl of 5 or 6, and her mother Esther flee Budapest just before the last of the Jews are rounded up. Disguising themselves as gentile peasants, they resettle in the countryside, where Esther finds herself doing what she must to survive--including becoming the mistress of the local Nazi commandant. The tale is gripping: anti-Semetic Hungarians, brutal Nazis, panic and selfishness dancing with compassion and sacrifice. Esther emerges as an incredibly admirable woman.The memoir begins with Esther reading the Biblical creation story to Miriam. But as the harrowing story unfolds, whatever faith in a benevolent and protective God that Miriam and Esther might've had drops away. Time and again, they realize that they, like all humanity, are on their own. The recollections are intercut with contemporary scenes in which Miriam, now a grown woman and still without religious faith, is conflicted about her own child going to Hebrew school and temple.We Are on Our Own's honesty is refreshing as well as potentially disturbing. How can one survive the Holocaust with a comfortable faith--or any faith, for that matter--intact? This is a question too frequently sidestepped, because the answer to it can be unpleasant. Katin doesn't shy away.

Or is it?This is the story of Miriam & her mother. Two Jews in Hungary. Miriam's father is fighting in the Hungarian Army. Life is becoming harder for Jews in Budapest. Miriam's mother fears what will happen & instead of staying & hoping for the best, like the vast majority of Jews sadly did; she chooses to run.Miriam is just about four. Her mother leaves almost all their possessions & leaves behind their family & friends. Her mother disguises herself as a peasant & Miriam is passed off as her illegitimate daughter. Miriam's mother even thought about faking their own deaths, so that no one would come looking for them.Her mother finds them shelter where she can. Miriam is quite straightforward in her telling. Her mother was especially brave. She does all she needs to do in order to keep both of them alive. Even, if it means allowing a German Nazi officer to have sex with her each night, so he will not denounce them as Jews. That episode ends when his Mistress finds out & she intends to denounce Miriam's mother. They flee in the nick of time.Eventually, the war ends. Miriam's mother searches for her husband. The Jewish man in charge of the search & rescue committee which is helping her, befriends her. He falls in love with her, but also learns the husband is alive & is also searching for his wife & child. Soon after, the illustrations end. There are two more pages telling in brief the story of this family in the ensuing years.Find this book. Read it. Be moved by it. Share it with others.

The book does give an excellent concise definition and explanation. Overall, I think this is a great purchase as an overview into a philosophy that is worth as much consideration today as it did in the midst of the forum’s of old.

This volume, by Olivia Gude and Jeff Huebner, is a tribute to the neighborhood public art of the city of Chicago.The book contains a short, but fascinating, history of the mural movement in Chicago. According to the authors, this artistic outpouring began in 1967, when 20 artists began work on the "Wall of Respect," a pictorial tribute to African-American culture.The book is divided up by neighborhoods. Each section contains a street map, so you can actually use the book to find the murals that have been photographed. 125 murals are pictured in the book. These works of art span many themes and styles. Each photograph is accompanied by essential information about the mural. Also adding to the book's usefulness is a bibliography and a collection of capsule biographies of major artists in the mural movement.It's hard to pick out just a few representative works from this magnificent collection. But my favorites include the following: William Walker's "Childhood Is Without Prejudice," with its interlocking faces of many races; Christopher Tavares Silva's "Soaring Toward Excellence," a symbolic, energetic celebration of books and education; Aurelio Diaz' "Latino Youth, Inc." mural, with its stunning pre-Columbian imagery; and Jeff Zimmerman's "Paid Programming," a visual satire in which the United States flag is morphed into a bar-code. Great book lots of information !!

I was looking for Life, Health and Accident for MI, but I did not cover everything.

I had to give this 3 stars because a person can pass the test if they use it, since you only need to get 70%. But it is poorly written with poor grammar in many places and has several glaring issues that would cause confusion, so it isn't efficient for quick study since there will be places you'll be going back, wondering what you've missed. Like, it has these quick summaries in each chapter to highlight the type of things you must know from the chapter, but in these summaries it sometimes adds vocabulary that were never mentioned in the chapter (will they be on the test?), or doesn't discuss the same issues that were mentioned in the chapter -- for example, for the spendthrift clause the chapter only talks about whether a beneficiary is a spendthrift and how you can arrange for benefits to be paid in that case. But in the quick summary it only talks about whether the insured is a spendthrift -- never mentioned in the chapter -- so you are left wondering what else they didn't tell you? This confirms my experience taking a practice SAT at Kaplan, where I found several of the questions were very poorly worded in a way that no one at the College Board would have done. If I were the head of an insurance company and my agents were using this, I'd be concerned. After all, it's priced the same as other textbooks but it hasn't been given what one would expect to be a reasonable amount of editorial supervision.

The revisionists of Mayr touted sympatric speciation, by which a new species evolves within nonisolated populations in response to several pressures, among which sexual selection ranks high. This is an extremely entertaining overview of the major theories of how new species emerge during biological evolution. Ideas from the technical literature such as allopatric speciation, sympatric speciation, and speciation through polyploidy are presented with lots of concrete examples, making the ideas very easy to digest.The science really comes alive in this book. Interviews with the scientists in the thick of research are enough to get you cheering for them. Also, Schilthuizen dramatizes in an engaging way the disputes between advocates of different theories of speciation.Finally, a useful glossary is provided at the end for anyone rusty on terminology from biology.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a quick, fun, yet informative, well-referenced, and up-to-date account of the state of the art in evolutionary biology.

This book is chock full of current "problems" in systematics and species concepts. I was able to use several of these stories to pass my oral pre-lims in entomology and systematics!I told the author so in an email! :)This was a few years ago - and now I'm returning to this book again in order to locate or develop a post-doc.

This is a quirky little book that gives you a nice overview on species and speciation. I'm an Ecology and Evolutionary biology major, and still find this book useful, but it also keeps things broad enough that a casual reader with little to no biology background could read it as well. It's also filled with small antecdotes that keep it entertaining and feeling more like a casual read than an educational one. Wonderful book if you're interested in learning or expanding your knowledge about species and speciation!

This book was gripping and a joy to read and convinced me even more about evolutionary processes in the context of speciation. It was also terse, punchy and easily understood. The author has done the spadework and interviewed lots of scientists to put this part Journalistic guided tour together.This book starts with Mayr and the definition of a species - perhaps the best part, and goes into great depth about allopatric speciation before moving onto sympatric modes, polyploidy in plants and instances of possible instant speciation with animals as well.There are really good examples provided from the Galapagos, Indonesia and Australasia, the lake Chichlid fishes, Banana flies, Insects and yes dandelions. Most of the examples are quite varied and easily appreciated.I could not fault this extremely informative and enjoyable read. You would find is useful if you need to brush up on the mechanisms of species formation but don't have time to wade through a Mayr or a more expensive and dull textbook.

One of the deepest questions in evolution is how new species form. A common view is that some members of a species have to become spatially isolated from the other members of the species in order for them to become a new species. This view, that a new species cannot form in the same territory as the old species has been challenged by many biologists who have used a variety of experimental and observational methods. They have shown that natural selection is a bigger factor than isolation in the formation of new species and that members of the same species living in the same territory can occupy different environmental niches. Since each niche is associated with different selection pressures, new species can and do form on the same territory as old ones.This new chapter of scientific history can now be read by everyone thanks to this clear, entertaining and even amusing book.
