We all have demons and addictions, but when a child comes, we all need to focus on what they need and desire. This book helps all dads (and moms and other caregivers) know (and accept) the difference between what they can help and what they can't and see how they might move items from the latter list into the former and deal with what matters so they can be there for their families (and others). Kudos and thanks to Michael G for having the chutzpah and compassion to offer this book!

Great book
The author knows what he is talking about, emotionally as well as intellectually. This is the kind of book we've been waiting for, published by the inspired community's leading recovery resource, Hazelden. But it's nothing like the usual "Recovery Literature" you've been through--it's a specific and thoughtful guide on how to be a responsible and loving adult, after an irresponsible past. If you don't learn "real world skills" from your own parents, it's intimidating to consider having children of your own. But Graubart speaks perfectly to these fears--we are all very human. No one has an ideal set up, and no one can be a "perfect" parent. The difficulties of your past, the skeletons in your closet, he describes, can be beautiful assets. He is a courageous author, and speaks from years of wise experience. There comes a point, in recovery, where you get the things you once dreamed about--family, career, home, and children. It can be frightening, of course, but Graubart reminds us that this is why we are here, this is why we recover. It's reassuring to read his words on these things, as a storyteller, an expert, a sponsor, a friend, and a counselor. This is a book to keep close, as you AND your kids become human beings. It's a process, and we're here to enjoy it. Grateful to the author.
